8.5 Monitoring and Control of Your Project

Project management is mostly about monitoring the progress against the project plan—the utilization of time, budget and resources. Hence, recording your activities against what you planned, for example in your Gantt chart, is vital to maintaining control of your project, and must be a regular feature in meetings with your supervisor (and client). If you notice that any element is going to deviate from the plan, then it is better to re-plan, and avoid failure, rather than having to ask for more money or time at the deadline of the project. In earlier chapters on planning, we discussed run-offs—if you do have to use one of these, then make sure to check what effect any changes have on your risk assessment and ethical approval, as well as finances and time. A controlled change is unlikely to be a problem.
